You know you live in Vienna …. when you spend a lot of your free time in museums! I mean there are something like over 100 museums in Vienna alone so how can you not find one (or two, or three) that truly excite you?
Yesterday was the annual “Long Night at the Museums” in Vienna (no, Ben Stiller was not here for a cameo appearance). Actually, it’s an Austria-wide event in which participating museums and cultural institutions open their doors from 6pm until 1am the next morning, and all you pay is a one-time fee of 13 Euros per person (not a bad deal at all!). We had so much fun participating last year, that we decided not to miss it again for (sniff, sniff) our last long museum night event in Vienna before our time is up here…
In true, “I’ve been living here long enough to not carry my camera everywhere” spirit, I forgot my camera at home but suffice it to say that we had lots of fun exploring the Belvedere Museum (hello Mr. Klimt’s kiss!), the Globe Museum (very cool collection of old globes along with a good history of cartography), the National Archives (random collection of old Austrian papers), and we also saw a teeny tiny bit of the Matisse exhibit at the Albertina before claustrophobia and heat exhaustion set in (I will never understand how art museums here are not climate controlled!). We were also a whole lot smarter than last year and stopped for dinner (with friends!) instead of running around Vienna high on art and culture with an empty stomach.
Since the kids stayed behind, we didn’t want to deprive them of any museum fun this weekend so we made use of a rainy and cold Sunday morning and schlepped them to the Haus der Musik – the house of music and sound. It’s a really fun and interactive museum that has something for every visitor! We are not very talented music-wise but do enjoy listening to classical music and we have been known on occasion to get jiggy with it so we thought it would make a fun outing (particularly since we had a saving card that gave us free admission!). All in all – 3 of us really enjoyed the museum (not bad, right?) and the 4th had a good time but drove us almost insane with his constant whining.
Anyway, I was very proud for bringing the camera today and getting some nice shots!
So yes, a fun outing indeed and I am sure we’ll be back for more! Perhaps with a less whiny 4-year old so that we can see if he also can dance like a penguin!
